It's All Good Baby Baby - A 90's Themed Pool Party

Jasmine “Golden Barbie” Sanders contacted us, wanting to surprise her best friend, Philip, with a funky ’90s-themed celebration at her home in Encino, California. With safety precautions in mind, we created a fun décor concept right in Jasmine’s backyard. The generous size of the yard, along with the swimming pool, provided a great backdrop to incorporate fun elements, a mixture of bright colors, and a blend of textures.

Gold linked “chains” were created from balloons, along with other traditional styles in shades of black, green, purple, pink, orange, yellow, and green. They draped along entryways, as well as decorated the pool to complement the colorful floats placed out for guests’ enjoyment while swimming. Family and friends dressed in a variety of retro tracksuits, throwback Guess clothing, and air-brushed T-shirts to keep in theme.

An ebony-colored bar emblazoned with Philip’s photo was well-stocked with liquor and mixers, so that loved ones could enjoy tasty libations while eating their hand-crafted soul food meal from Chef Mel. The chef prepared an old-fashioned cookout complete with delicious hot dogs, thick hamburgers, savory baked beans, rich macaroni and cheese, and tasty potato salad.

As family and friends entered, they were reminded to address the birthday boy as “King Philip” throughout the festivities. He sat in an undersized bullion-colored velvet king’s chair, which stood out nicely amongst the other plush couches and ottomans in rich gem-stoned shades. We also crafted a one-of-a-kind “King Philip” corn hole game that showcased the same happy photo of Philip that was seen on the bar – that’s always a great keepsake for the birthday boy/girl to hold onto long after the party is over.

Another cool 1990s element was the personalized graffiti wall we produced in lieu of a typical guest book. We invited Nerv Skyhigh to do his magic: spray-painting Philip’s name on a wall, where guests could later sign and write sweet birthday messages to the King. The party was intimate, the attendees fun-spirited, food scrumptious, and drinks strong – just what this group of royals wanted for the day!
